Equine Welfare Australia
FACTS AND FICTION
A balanced view
Let's first start a discussion of what exactly "Equine Welfare" consists.
Firstly, looking at how it is defined according to Australian Law. According to the RSPCA :
"There are no national laws applying to animal welfare, but all states and territories regulate animal welfare in their jurisdiction. The legislation in each state and territory is given below:"
NSW: Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1979
Qld: Animal Care and Protection Act 2001
Vic: Prevention of Cruelty to Animals Act 1986
Next we look at the Australian Horse Welfare Protocol
managed by the Australian Horse Industry Council.
NB: As updated version of the Australian Horse Welfare Protocol are released, the above link may not work, so refer back to the AHIC to get any future links. Please report broken links.
Logically then, in order to determine if a horse's welfare is in question, given its use, should be a matter of cross checking its use and conditions against the laws and the Australian Horse Welfare Protocol.
